REFURBISHMENT OF THE BENAKIO BUILDING OF THE HELLENIC AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
Benakio building is the oldest and largest building among the Athens College establishments in Psichico. The first phase of its construction began in 1927 and was completed in 1932. Its structural system is composed of load bearing masonry with reinforced concrete slabs and beams. The width of the load bearing walls is 60cm, and their symmetrical and compact construction in the three main floors, inspires confidence both for their structural capacity and their seismic behaviour.
The design's main aim was to reduce the structural interventions, in order to avoid, typically and essentially, the checking procedures of the existing structure. For this reason, the interventions on the structural system proposed by the architectural design have a local character. The project includes the erection of 2 new steel escape staircases, the creation of new openings in the indoor load bearing walls, the elimination of existing openings and the constrution of the steel structural framing system for a new auxiliary elevator.
The structural design was carried out by 50% in collaboration with G. XATZOPOULOS & PARTNERS L.P.
