Project' s Description
Structural design of the new steel roof canopy of a sports center with a surface area of 1400 m2. The roof consists of 7 type N (Pratt) trusses of 30m span, supported on existing reinforced concrete beams and walls. The trusses are connected via longitudinal members, in order to reduce the out-of-plane buckling length, mainly of the top chord, under gravity loads, but also of the bottom chord, under the action of wind suction. All the sections are rolled I and H sections, except for the trusses’ diagonals, which are square hollow members.
The roofing is supported via a 75mm high trapezoidal decking. The latter is self-supported for the design loads, for a 4m span. In this way, purlins have been omitted, as the decking spans directly between the main trusses.
The design ensures the diaphragmatic action of the roof, which allows the leveraging of the high lateral stiffness of the corner shear walls. For the achievement of the diaphragmatic action, roof bracings are provided, assisting the function of the trapezoidal decking
