Project's Description
The project concerns a cable net & mesh system for the containment of accidentally falling marble pieces in a quarry in Drama regional unit, Greece.
The structure consists of main longitudinal wire ropes, anchored at intervals to the rock mass on the sides of the galleries. These wire ropes are supported by densely spaced transverse wire ropes to which steel mesh is attached.
Our scope was the analysis and design of the main wire rope structure. Bentley's Staad-Pro-advanced software was used, where non-linear analysis was performed, due to the large deformations.
The impact force was calculated from the relation 𝐹 = 𝑚𝑔𝐻/𝑑 , where, H = drop height and d = rock displacement until the it is retracted. As it is obvious, the larger the, the smaller the impact force. On the other hand, the greater the impact force, the greater the deformation. Consequently, an iterative procedure was required, until there was a substantial match between the value of the displacement d used in the force calculation and the displacement resulting from the analysis for this force
